Title La kasha shannau (The Jealous Younger Brother) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The title of the story I am going to tell you now is 'Two poor brothers.' Once upon a time, there were two brothers. One day, the younger brother said, "My elder brother, now is the time to spread seeds. What do you think? What shall we do?" Then their mother said, "My younger son, your elder brother is not as sharp as you. He will do as you say. You should lead him." The younger brother was smarter and more intelligent than the elder brother. Ma Naw, the younger brother, said to his mother, "Okay. Then I will tell him what to do." He then turned to his elder brother and said, "Brother, do as I say. Tomorrow we need to spread seeds and start planting in our fields. Since we cleaned our fields separately, let's plant different crops. I will plant millets in my field. You need to scrape the buffalo horn and spread it across your field tomorrow, so scrape it today." The next morning, the two brothers went to their fields. The horn powder was spread in the elder brother's field, while the younger brother planted millets in his field. When the harvest season came, the younger brother's millets were ready to be harvested. The younger brother asked his elder brother, "Millets are growing well in my field. They are ready to be harvested. What about your field? What is growing there?" The elder brother said, "My field is filled with something that makes a sound like 'nyawt.'" When the younger brother went there to see if it was true, he found many buffaloes in the field. He was jealous when he saw that his brother's field was full of buffaloes. Then he ground some rice to make powder. After he got some rice powder, he secretly went to his elder brother's field and applied it to the buffaloes. All the buffaloes turned white. Then he said to his elder brother, "My brother, all the white buffaloes from your field are mine. The black ones are yours." The number of white buffaloes was much greater than the number of black ones. When the younger brother took the white buffaloes, the elder brother felt frustrated and shouted at the sky, "Oh, Sky Deity, look at what is happening to me!" Surprisingly, the sky turned black, and heavy rain started pouring down. Then all the rice powder applied to the buffaloes was rinsed off, and the buffaloes returned to their original black color. The younger brother thought of another plan to get his elder brother's buffaloes. He said, "Elder brother, your sister-in-law has passed away. Let's go cut some wood to make a coffin for her. Let's go together." In fact, he was lying. Then they went into the forest and cut down a large tree. They made a coffin. After that, the younger brother said to his elder brother, "Brother, let's see if it fits your sister-in-law's body. Can you please lie down in it?" The elder brother said, "It should fit." But the younger brother insisted, "No, lie down in it. Let's see if it fits. If it's too small, we will need to make it bigger." He kept asking his elder brother to lie down in the coffin. In the end, the elder brother had no choice but to lie down. As soon as the elder brother lay down, the younger brother closed the coffin and tied it with some vines he had secretly brought. And he went back home. The elder brother, who was inside the coffin, kicked the lid to get out. He had been kicking it the whole afternoon. In the end, the vines broke, and he was finally able to get out. He was frustrated by how his younger brother had treated him. Therefore, he thought of a plan to teach his younger brother a lesson. He said, "My younger brother, your sister-in-law has passed away. Let's go cut down some trees to make a coffin for her." The younger brother refused his elder brother's request. He said, "My elder brother, ask someone else. I am busy. I can't go with you." But the elder brother said, "No. Help me. Come with me to cut down the trees." Then the younger brother had to help the elder brother. The elder brother decided to treat his younger brother the same way. He said, "Let's see if it fits for your sister-in-law. Lie down in it. I think your body is about the same size as your sister-in-law's." The younger brother refused to lie inside it. However, the elder brother kept asking him to do so. Then, the younger brother had to lie down inside it. As soon as the younger brother was inside the coffin, the elder brother closed the lid and tied it tightly with vines. The vines were so strong that the younger brother was unable to kick the lid open. The next morning, the elder brother went there again. He brought some people to help him. Then they hung the coffin from a tree growing at the top of the waterfall. And they went back home. The elder brother said to the squirrel, "Squirrel, go to the tree near the waterfall. There is a coffin hanging there. Go check if the person inside is dead or alive." But the squirrel misheard him. It understood that it should cut the vine tying the coffin to the tree, instead of realizing that the man wanted it to go check inside. It spent the whole day and night cutting the vines that tied the coffin to the tree. The next morning, it finally managed to cut the vine. They fell into the waterfall. The younger brother inside the coffin died after falling into the waterfall and became the "Gaw Sa" nat. We still make offerings to the Gaw Sa nat to this day. That nat was the spirit of the younger brother who died inside the coffin after falling into the waterfall. He became the Gaw Sa nat after he died from falling into a deep place. The Gaw Sa nat does not exist in the plains. The Gaw Sa nat exists only in places such as ravines and canyons.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of a community-based collaborative fieldwork project in northern Myanmar. As of February 25, 2026, the collection includes 2,491 stories, 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,800 translations.


Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Translations were prepared by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
