There is a story that the Jinghpaw people often tell about the laws and rules that we need to follow, whether in the family or in a country. This story is about treating the children of the first wife and the mistress differently. Once upon a time, there was a family in a village. In the past, the Jinghpaw people used to say that if a family didn't have three sons and three daughters, it was not considered a successful family. Or, it could also be that the man's first wife passed away, so he remarried. Then, the man's first wife passed away, and he was left with a son. Later, he married again. The second wife didn't like the first wife's son because he was not her biological son. She only took care of her biological child. She didn't care about him at all and didn't feed him well. One day, the father and his son from the first wife went hunting and caught a boar. Then the second wife and her biological son followed them and prepared to carry it back home. Then she said to the boy of the first wife, "If you make a sound like 'Ka', this meat will go sour. If you make a sound like 'Hwi', the meat will be bitter. Don't make any sounds or say you are tired." Then they cut down a tree to use as a yoke to carry the boar. The two boys tied the boar's legs together and hung it on the tree trunk they had cut. The stepmother trimmed the tree trunk smoothly on the side carried by her biological son and made it rough on the side carried by her husband's son. Then the two boys carried it on the way home. Her biological son didn't make any sound because the side of the trunk he carried was smooth and didn't cause him any pain. It was painful for the first wife's son because there were some spikes on his side of the trunk. Then he made a sound 'Aka'. He said, "I can't carry it." She scolded him, "I told you not to make any sound! If you make a sound like 'Ka', the meat will go sour. If you make a sound like 'Hwi', the meat will be bitter!" He said, "Let's change the position. Let's roll it around." However, she made the boy carry the spiky end. Later, they arrived home. The stepmother cooked bitter heart-leaved moonseed vine and sour Garcinia cambogia fruit. And she ordered her stepson to fetch some water. She told him to carry a basket full of water. But she secretly made holes in the bottom of the basket. The boy fetched water with that basket, so it couldn't be filled. He was scared that she might beat him or scold him. The egret saw him and said, "Fetching water, making the water overflow," and flew toward the upriver area. The boy was getting frustrated because the basket couldn't be filled with water, no matter how hard he tried. Then, when he heard the bird, he got annoyed and caught it. However, he was taking too long to fetch water. Meanwhile, the stepmother cooked bitter heart-leaved moonseed vine and sour Garcinia cambogia fruit and left it for him. She sold some of the meat and cooked the rest for her family. They enjoyed the pork, but left nothing for the boy. She called the boy to come back and acted as if she treated him warmly. She said to him, "This is your meal." He tried the meat and said, "Oh, it is sour." She blamed him, "It's because you said 'Ka'. That's why the meat is sour." He tried another bite and said, "It's bitter." She said, "You said 'Hwi'. That's why the meat is bitter." We still have the egrets that are mentioned in this story. The tree they cut is called the "Wa Hpai" tree, which has spikes on the lower part and no spikes on the upper part. We said we wouldn't talk about the law and rules, but we ended up talking about it. The boy had to eat only those sour and bitter foods in the end. The mother did not treat the children fairly. This story is about how rules and treatment in a family are carried out. Let's just say it is about rules. This is the end of the story.

Ndai maumwi gaw num kaba hte num kaji jan a kashu kasha hpe e ginhka, garan ginhka ai lam maumwi re. Moi... mare langai mi hta e da e.. htinggaw langai mi nga ai...da. Nga.. rai yang gaw e dai htinggaw dinghku la wa gaw e moi na anhte Jinghpaw ni hkai e, labau hta gaw gam masum, kaw masum sha nlu yang la njet ai nga baw le i, dai baw mung she nrai na dawng, shing nrai tinang shawng jan n nga mat ai majaw bai hpang jan la ai hku dai hku mung she nre dawng. E.. mabyin chyawm dai hku re da. E.. mare langai kaw e la langai gaw shawng jan la... re ai hpang e, shawng jan nnga mat ai hpang shadang sha gaw nga rai nna hpang num bai la ai da. Hpang num la rai yang gaw e hpang num jan gaw nau nhkrak na hku rai nga. Tinang nshang hkrat ma hpe kasha hpe she grau ra ai hku rai nga, shawng kana ngu na shawng jan na kasha hpe gaw nau nra ai hku rai nga. Dan ngu rai yang gaw kaja wa le.. shan de du rai yang gaw shan dai hpe e hpai na matu hpun langai mi hpya ai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of a community-based collaborative fieldwork project in northern Myanmar. As of April 22, 2026, the collection includes 2,491 stories, 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,840 translations.


Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Translations were prepared by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
